Barbara Duval Named 2018-2020 Phi Kappa Phi Artist

Baton Rouge, LA (05/10/2018) — Barbara Duval, professor in the Department of Studio Art at College of Charleston, has been selected by The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society, as the 2018-2020 Phi Kappa Phi Artist. Duval received the award for her career accomplishments as a professor, painter and printmaker, and campus leader.

Duval's career as an artist and scholar spans 40 years. During this time, her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States and internationally in Japan, Belgium, Dominican Republic and Argentina. Her work is also included in several public and private collections including The Fogg Art Museum, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Contemporary Art and Culture Center in Osaka, Japan.

Recognized as a leader both on campus and in the art community, Duval has received a number of national and international honors including fellowships from the Fulbright-Hays Commission, the Belgian American Educational Foundation, the Ford Foundation, Brandywine Workshop and the MacDowell Colony. She has also served as artist-in-residence at several institutions in the United States and abroad.

"The fact that a scholarship has been endowed in Barbara Duval's name at the institution at which she still teaches is but the most unusual of the many manifestations of her impact and success as a teacher and mentor," said Dr. David Sokol, chair of the Phi Kappa Phi Scholar & Artist selection committee. "Her professional service has had an impact on her college, the art community of Charleston and beyond, and that she serves as secretary of her Phi Kappa Phi chapter only emphasizes how all-embracing is her place across the range of activities of an artist-teacher."

Extending beyond her career achievements, Duval has exemplified service in a number of volunteer leadership roles with local and regional arts organizations serving on boards, committees and volunteer arts groups. She also regularly gives lectures and presentations at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston and at several other institutions.

Duval has taught at College of Charleston since 1982 and is the 2001 recipient of the college's Distinguished Research Award. Currently, she teaches all levels and processes of printmaking in the Department of Studio Art and is the area head of the printmaking program at the college. In 2004, a scholarship was endowed at the College of Charleston in Duval's name. Created by a former student of hers, the endowed scholarship is designed to support the retention of the most talented students in the Studio Art Department.

Duval received a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute in 1978 and an M.F.A. from the Yale University School of Art in 1982.

First presented in 1983, the Phi Kappa Phi Artist Award recognizes the achievements of those who, in addition to their outstanding scholarship, have displayed talents in the broad realm of the arts--creative, graphic, performing, visual and fine arts. The award is given once every two years. Recipients receive a $1,000 honorarium, life membership and recognition citation. Duval will accept the award on August 3 at the Society's biennial convention in Minneapolis.
