Katharine Broton Awarded Phi Kappa Phi Dissertation Fellowship

2016 Feb 24

Katharine Broton of Madison, Wisc., has been selected as a recipient of a 2016 Dissertation Fellowship from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi--the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all disciplines. Broton, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, is one of two recipients nationwide to receive the $10,000 fellowship.

Her dissertation, The Evolution of Poverty in Higher Education: Material Hardship, Academic Success, and Policy Perspectives, examines the relationship between material hardship and academic achievement and degree attainment.

"The results of this research project will guide poverty alleviation efforts underway at colleges across the nation and inform a larger policy debate about the types and levels of support that might promote academic success among college students struggling to make ends meet," said Broton.

The Dissertation Fellowship program, established in 2014, supports active Society members currently in the dissertation writing stage of doctoral study. The Society's robust award programs grant more than $1 million each biennium to outstanding students and members through fellowships, undergraduate study abroad grants, member and chapter awards and grants for local and national literacy initiatives.
