Phi Kappa Phi Awards 2023 Literacy Grants

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is proud to announce its 2023 Literacy Grant recipients. The grants of up to $2,500 were awarded to Phi Kappa Phi chapters and individual members to fund literacy initiatives.

Phi Kappa Phi MTSU students awarded Paul W. Martin Sr. Scholarships

The Paul W. Martin Sr. Scholarship is named in honor of the father of Paul and Lee Martin, who made the Honors building at Middle Tennessee State University possible. Paul Martin, a member of the Honor College Board of Vistors, presented the awards to the students.

Phi Kappa Phi Member Samantha Fabian Wins Boren Award

The National Security Education Program has offered five University of Mississippi students coveted David L. Boren Scholarships. Samantha Fabian, of Omaha, Nebraska, is one of those students. Boren scholars and fellows study critical languages and plan to work in positions crucial to U.S. national security. Recipients come from diverse fields of study and immerse themselves in the cultures of world regions underrepresented in study abroad, such as Africa, Asia, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East.

Phi Kappa Phi University of Kentucky A&S Students Receive Fulbrights

The University of Kentucky Office of Nationally Competitive Awards has announced that three College of Arts & Sciences students have been offered Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarships to travel abroad to teach, study or pursue research for the 2023-24 academic year. Recipients of Fulbright grants are selected based on academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. The program operates in more than 140 countries.

Phi Kappa Phi MTSU undergrads, wins Mayo Clinic challenge at national conference

MTSU recently sent 16 undergraduates to participate in the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research and one student, Janna Abou-Rahma, was part of the team that won a highly competitive challenge putting her in the top 1% of hundreds of applicants. More commonly known as NCUR, the annual conference took place this April at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Phi Kappa Phi Mississippi State forestry students honored for leadership, academics

Mississippi State's Department of Forestry celebrated exceptional students at the annual spring College of Forest Resources Student Awards Ceremony, honoring undergraduate and graduate students for academic excellence. The department is part of the only nationally accredited educational program in the state for educating and developing future leaders in natural resources. CFR graduates enjoy a high rate of employment across the U.S. and Mississippi in an industry that provides almost 70,000 jobs and has a $13.12 billion economic impact on the state.

Phi Kappa Phi Member Rabria Moore Earns Fulbright Award

Rabria Moore, a journalism and political science major from Durant, received a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant award to teach in Zambia. She is one of eight University of Mississippi students to have earned Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards this year, the most ever in university history. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program partners students with universities and schools from more than 140 nations around the globe to promote international study and cross-cultural dialogue. The selective program is available to seniors, graduate and doctoral students from the United States.

Edith Marie Green, Phi Kappa Phi member, Earns Fulbright Award

MSU Phi Kappa Phi students win top honors in state journalism awards

More than two dozen Mississippi State students won top honors, including "General Excellence" for the third year in a row for The Reflector, MSU's student newspaper, at the annual Mississippi Press Association's O.C. McDavid Journalism Summit in March. Reflector writers captured first place in General News Story, Feature Story, General News Photo and General Interest Column. In addition to the first-place awards, the Reflector won 15 second- and third-place awards. Bulldog Online Newsroom won one second-place award. Founded in 1866, the Mississippi Press Association, located in Jackson, is the sixth-oldest association of its kind in the United States and continues to be a leader in service to print journalism across the nation.

Phi Kappa Phi Member Ciera Davisson Receives Derek Thomson Sheely Leadership Award and Scholarship

Frostburg State University student, Ciera Davisson, recieved the 2023 Derek Thomson Sheely Leadership Award and Scholarship at the 2023 Leadership and Engagement Awards celebration on May 4. This award is persented to a junior at FSU with a specific GPA and who best exemplifies the qualities of leadership that Derek demonstrated. It includes a full-tuition scholarship for the recipient's senior year at FSU and requires them to complete 40 hours of community service to increase awareness surrounding concussions and brain injuries in sports.

Phi Kappa Phi member, Landon Scheel wins 'Best of the South' regional journalism award

More than a dozen Mississippi State students won top journalism awards at the 2023 Southeast Journalism Conference for their work in broadcast, print and online journalism. Held at Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana, the February conference included 25 regional schools. MSU students won 23 total awards in the annual "Best of the South" and "On-Site" journalism competitions. The SEJC is comprised of nearly 50 member colleges and universities in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee, and was created to encourage greater interest in student journalism and form ties among regional journalism schools.

Phi Kappa Phi Member Wins National Research Award

William Hennig of Paint Rock and Garath Vetters of Kingsland, both physics majors at Angelo State University, won top prizes for their research presentations at the 2022 Physics Congress (PhysCon) in Washington, D.C. PhysCon is held every three years and is the largest conference in the nation for physics and astronomy undergraduate students with more than 1,200 participants. Competing against about 400 other student research entries: Hennig was named Top Presenter in the Statistical/Thermal/Non-Linear/Complex Systems category for his poster and presentation on his project titled "Equilibration Times of 3D Edwards-Anderson Spin Glasses." Vetters was named Top Presenter in the 100 Years of Momentum category for his poster and presentation on his project titled "Detecting Cosmic Rays on Earth's Surface and Above." Both Hennig and Vetters received a $100 award and a year's subscription to the Wolfram Mathematica software system. Nicholas Swartz of Abilene was also a finalist for his project titled "Modeling, Constructing, and Testing an Electromagnetic Rail Gun with Python." See more details at angelo.edu/news.
