The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Troy University is proud to recognize students who were named members of "The 87". The 87, formerly Who's Who, recognizes juniors, seniors and graduate students who have excelled in campus leadership and in their academic area.

Angelo State University's chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) national honor society recently inducted its fall 2021 class of 86 students during a special virtual initiation ceremony on Facebook. PKP is the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for students in all academic disciplines. Invitations to join PKP are extended to juniors in the top 7.5% of their class and to seniors and graduate students in the top 10% of their class. Sophia Berg of Georgetown, a middle blocker on the Angelo State University Belles volleyball team, has been named the 2021 Lone Star Conference Academic Player of the Year. A senior biology major with a 4.0 GPA, Berg was also named to the LSC All-Academic team, along with teammate Chole Patton of Gillett, a biology major with a 3.81 GPA. The All-Academic Team is selected by the league's sports information directors, based on both athletic and academic achievement. To be eligible, student-athletes must have played in at least 50% of their team's contests, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, completed at least one full academic year at the nominating institution, and have a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA for her entire collegiate career. Phi Kappa Phi members nationwide have been selected to serve as officers for their local chapters.

Cameron Poole of Kerrville, a junior animal science major at Angelo State University, has been awarded a $4,000 2021 Rodeo Achievement Scholarship from Rodeo Houston. The Achievement Scholarships are awarded to current Rodeo scholars who are working toward an undergraduate degree, have completed four semesters and at least 60 hours of coursework, and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher at a Texas college or university. Each student will receive an additional $4,000 scholarship for each eligible semester. Poole is a regular on the ASU Dean's List, ASU Athletic Director's Honor Roll and Lone Star Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll. Phi Kappa Phi student vice presidents from across the nation recently attended the Society's 2021 Student Vice President Leadership Summit held July 13-15 and July 20-22 as a web-based event.

Chelsea Owens has been named drum major of the world-renowned Marching Southerners at Jacksonville State University for 2021-2022.

Phi Kappa Phi recently announced the recipients of a 2021 Fellowship. The prestigious $8,500 fellowships were awarded to 50 students nationwide.

Phi Kappa Phi recently named the recipients of its 2021 Marcus L. Urann Fellowships. The prestigious $20,000 fellowships were awarded to six students nationwide.

John Strickland has been named mellophone section leader for the world-renowned Marching Southerners at Jacksonville State University for 2021-2022.

Phi Kappa Phi recently named the recipient of its 2021 Sherrill Carlson Fellowship. The prestigious $35,000 fellowship is named for Carlson, a former Washington State University chapter president and lifelong supporter of Phi Kappa Phi.

Five members of the Angelo State University Belles tennis team have been named 2020-21 NCAA Division II Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The Belles were also named a 2020-21 ITA All-Academic Team. To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must have at least a 3.5 GPA and be eligible for competition. Belles Scholar-Athletes are Zoe Gubbels of Velserbroek, Netherlands; Ena Ovcina of Tidaholm, Sweden; Dianela Rodriguez of Mexico City, Mexico; Anna Schneemann of San Angelo; and Alexandra Vishnevskaya of Moscow, Russia. The Belles won their second straight Lone Star Conference Championship this spring and advanced to the NCAA D-II South Central Regional, reaching the Sweet 16. Earlier in the season, they finished fourth at the ITA D-II Indoor Nationals. More details are available on the ITA website.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is proud to announce its 2021 Literacy Grant recipients. The grants of up to $2,500 were awarded to Phi Kappa Phi chapters and individual members to fund literacy initiatives.

Riley Nicole Taylor, Bethany Harper and Marcus Garrett Ruddicks thrived academically and earned cumulative 4.0 grade-point averages during their Warrior years. They share the 2021 Metzger-Geiger Award for their accomplishments.

Graduating senior John (Jack) Garrett of Marblehead, Mass., was awarded the Levinus Clarkson Award during Clarkson University's spring 2021 commencement ceremony. He was selected for the $1,000 award by a vote of the full University faculty based on his scholarship and promise of outstanding achievement. The award was established by University founders Elizabeth and Frederica Clarkson in memory of their brother, Levinus, and was first awarded in 1909. This award and the Frederica Clarkson Award are traditionally given to the two top students in the graduating class. Garrett earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering with a concentration in electrical power engineering, and minors in sustainable energy systems engineering, project management, and mathematics. He was a presidential scholar for all of his semesters at Clarkson and graduated with a 3.95 GPA. Garrett is a member of Clarkson's academic, leadership, mathematics, engineering, and electrical engineering honors societies, was the vice president and electrical engineering lead for the Formula Electric SPEED team, and helped establish the IEEE (Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers) student branch at Clarkson. Garrett also received the John W. Estey Outstanding Scholar Award from the IEEE Power and Energy Society for IEEE Region 1, one of only seven recipients across the U.S. and Canada.

Graduating senior Isabella Grasso of Portland, ME., received the Frederica Clarkson Award during Clarkson University's spring 2021 commencement ceremony. She was selected for the $1,000 award by a vote of the full University faculty based on her scholarship and promise of outstanding achievement. The award was established in 1921 as a bequest in the will of Frederica Clarkson, sister of Thomas S. Clarkson, for whom the University is named. This award and the Levinus Clarkson Award are traditionally given to the two top students in the graduating class. Grasso earned a bachelor of science degree in data science. She was a presidential scholar for all of her semesters at Clarkson and graduated with a 3.93 GPA.

Mitch Deleel, an award-winning debater who made his mark at McKendree University and on the national stage, has received the 2021 Technos International Prize.

Six members of the Angelo State University Belles tennis team have earned Lone Star Conference postseason awards after leading their team to a second straight LSC title this spring. Zoe Gubbels of Velserbroek, Netherlands, was named the LSC Academic Player of the Year and Sportsmanship Player of the Year. Valentina Gonzalez of Medellin, Colombia, earned All-LSC first team honors for singles and was also named to the All-LSC first team for doubles along with her partner, Ena Ovcina of Tidaholm, Sweden. Also, Dianela Rodriguez and Maria Delgadillo of Mexico City, Mexico, and Virginie Becht of Vero Beach, Fla., were named to the All-LSC second team for singles - and Becht made the All-LSC second team for doubles along with Gubbels.
