Clarkson University Senior John (Jack) Garrett Receives Levinus Clarkson Award

Graduating senior John (Jack) Garrett of Marblehead, Mass., was awarded the Levinus Clarkson Award during Clarkson University's spring 2021 commencement ceremony. He was selected for the $1,000 award by a vote of the full University faculty based on his scholarship and promise of outstanding achievement. The award was established by University founders Elizabeth and Frederica Clarkson in memory of their brother, Levinus, and was first awarded in 1909. This award and the Frederica Clarkson Award are traditionally given to the two top students in the graduating class. Garrett earned a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering with a concentration in electrical power engineering, and minors in sustainable energy systems engineering, project management, and mathematics. He was a presidential scholar for all of his semesters at Clarkson and graduated with a 3.95 GPA. Garrett is a member of Clarkson's academic, leadership, mathematics, engineering, and electrical engineering honors societies, was the vice president and electrical engineering lead for the Formula Electric SPEED team, and helped establish the IEEE (Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers) student branch at Clarkson. Garrett also received the John W. Estey Outstanding Scholar Award from the IEEE Power and Energy Society for IEEE Region 1, one of only seven recipients across the U.S. and Canada.

Clarkson University Senior Isabella Grasso Receives Frederica Clarkson Award

Graduating senior Isabella Grasso of Portland, ME., received the Frederica Clarkson Award during Clarkson University's spring 2021 commencement ceremony. She was selected for the $1,000 award by a vote of the full University faculty based on her scholarship and promise of outstanding achievement. The award was established in 1921 as a bequest in the will of Frederica Clarkson, sister of Thomas S. Clarkson, for whom the University is named. This award and the Levinus Clarkson Award are traditionally given to the two top students in the graduating class. Grasso earned a bachelor of science degree in data science. She was a presidential scholar for all of her semesters at Clarkson and graduated with a 3.93 GPA.

The University of Mississippi welcomed more than 200 students into the UM chapter of Phi Kappa Phi for the spring 2021 semester. Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest and most selective honor society for all academic disciplines.

ΦKΦ Member Zoe Gubbels, Other Angelo State Belles Tennis Players Earn All-LSC Honors

Six members of the Angelo State University Belles tennis team have earned Lone Star Conference postseason awards after leading their team to a second straight LSC title this spring. Zoe Gubbels of Velserbroek, Netherlands, was named the LSC Academic Player of the Year and Sportsmanship Player of the Year. Valentina Gonzalez of Medellin, Colombia, earned All-LSC first team honors for singles and was also named to the All-LSC first team for doubles along with her partner, Ena Ovcina of Tidaholm, Sweden. Also, Dianela Rodriguez and Maria Delgadillo of Mexico City, Mexico, and Virginie Becht of Vero Beach, Fla., were named to the All-LSC second team for singles - and Becht made the All-LSC second team for doubles along with Gubbels. Angelo State Announces 2021 Top Graduates; Four Are ΦKΦ Members

Phyllis Kate Creecy of Denton has been selected to receive Angelo State University's 2021 Presidential Award as the top graduate in her class, while five other ASU graduating seniors have been selected for 2021 Distinguished Student Awards from their respective academic colleges. Creecy will be recognized at ASU's May 14-15 commencement ceremonies, along with the five Distinguished Student Award honorees. The Distinguished Student Award recipients are: Clara Aguirre of Refugio, Archer College of Health and Human Services Crystal Mendez of San Angelo, College of Arts and Humanities Byanca Sanchez of Canadian, College of Education Marissa Brezgiel of Frisco, College of Science and Engineering Caylee Gibson of San Angelo, Norris-Vincent College of Business ASU's Academic Excellence Committee hosted an awards ceremony May 3 in the Houston Harte University Center to honor all the award recipients and nominees. Society Member at Bloomsburg University Places First for Presentation

Bloomsburg University student Jason Stone, a senior biochemistry major from Dresher, won first place for his oral presentation on his research at the 84th Annual Intercollegiate Chemist Convention, held virtually and hosted by Lehigh University. Stone, who has been conducting research for several years in the lab of Matthew Polinski, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, was part of the (Bio)Inorganic group that also included undergraduate student presenters from Swarthmore College, Lehigh University, Ursinus College, Towson University, Messiah University, and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Angelo State Announces Spring 2021 Phi Kappa Phi Inductees

Angelo State University's chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi (PKP) national honor society recently inducted its spring 2021 class of 41 students during a special virtual initiation ceremony on Facebook. PKP is the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society encompassing all academic disciplines. Invitations to join PKP are extended to juniors in the top 7.5% of their class and to seniors and graduate students in the top 10% of their class. Society member Laticia Feliciano participates in the Frederick Douglass Research and Debate series

Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania students Laticia Feliciano and Serenity Vidot have been chosen to participate in the Frederick Douglass Research and Debate series presented by the Frederick Douglass Institute (FDI) Collaborative. The FDI Collaborative exists across the 14 universities of Pennsylvania's State System of Higher Education. This series is an annual event and is being hosted virtually this year. Submissions were accepted from students across all System schools and focused on social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion from all disciplines. Only 20 submissions were accepted to present.

Angelo State's Lewis, Phi Kappa Phi Member, Earns Fulbright Research Internship

Jazlynn Lewis of Bandera, a sophomore in the Angelo State University Honors Program, has been selected for a 2021 Fulbright Canada - MITACS Globalink Research Internship. Fewer than 100 of the fully-funded summer internships are awarded each year. Selectees will spend 10-12 weeks this summer working with research teams from across the U.S. and Canada on projects supervised by Canadian university faculty members. Lewis, an animal science major, will participate in a project titled "Understanding the role of blood flow alterations in the development of equine laminitis" led by Prof. Julia Montgomery of the University of Saskatchewan-Saskatoon. Angelo State Volleyball Players Earn All-Conference Honors

Seven members of the Angelo State University Belles volleyball team have earned Lone Star Conference postseason awards for their performances during the 2021 spring season that saw the Belles win their second straight LSC Championship. Five Belles earned LSC All-Conference honors, including Kailyn Gilbreath of Fort Worth being named LSC Player of the Year. Also earning All-Conference honors are Sophia Berg of Georgetown, Lindsey Ledyard of Cedar Park, Chloe Patton of Gillette, and Grace White of Helotes. ASU's Elsa Lamphere of Aurora, Colo., was named to the All-Freshman Team. Additionally - Berg, Gilbreath, Patton and Morgan Preston of Vicksburg, Mich., earned LSC All-Academic Awards. New Churchill Scholar is U's 6th, tying second-longest streak

Isaac Martin, a senior honors student majoring in mathematics and physics, has received the prestigious Churchill Scholarship to study at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. He is one of only 17 students nationally to receive the award this year and is the sixth consecutive Churchill Scholar from the University of Utah. Martin's designation ties Harvard's six-year run of consecutive Churchill Scholars (1987-1992) and is second only to Princeton's seven-year streak (1994-2000).

Timothy Belin, Berry College student newspaper writer, earns award in state competition

ROME, Ga. - The Berry College student newspaper, Campus Carrier, recently won 13 awards for journalism excellence in the 2020 Georgia College Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. The newspaper received third-place award for general excellence in its division.
